FBU ballots members over pay and duties

THE Fire Brigades Union (FBU) will undertake a consultative ballot of 33,000 of its members over pay and extra duties.

The union says employers want to expand the role of firefighters, such as by attending medical emergencies, but that any list of extra duties would be “non-exhaustive” meaning employers could add to it whenever they wanted.

Firefighters’ wages have been hit by government-imposed freezes, and jobs and fire stations have been axed due to austerity.

Employers have proposed a three-year pay deal involving 2, 3 and 4 per cent increases.

The union is urging its members to reject both proposals in a consultative ballot.

The FBU said: “This affects the future of every single union member and that is why all FBU members are being asked to vote ‘yes’ in a consultative ballot to reject the employers’ free-for-all flexible contracts and ‘yes’ to build our campaign and make the case for funding of our service, including pay.”
