Ferrier admits to putting people at risk by failing to follow Covid-19 lockdown rules

RUTHERGLEN AND HAMILTON WEST MP Margaret Ferrier yesterday admitted putting people at risk by failing to follow Covid-19 lockdown rules.

Ms Ferrier travelled on a train between Scotland and London with coronavirus symptoms and failed to self-isolate in September 2020.

In a hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday, Ms Ferrier admitted that she “culpably and recklessly” exposed the public to risk of Covid-19 infection.

Ms Ferrier has sat as an independent MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West since October 2020 after being suspended by the SNP for breaching Covid lockdown rules.

She was arrested in January 2021 and charged with “culpable and reckless conduct” and has come under pressure from the SNP to resign her parliamentary seat.

Ms Ferrier admitted wilfully exposing people “to the risk of infection, illness and death” by visiting various places in the Glasgow area and London and failing to self-isolate in late September 2020.

At the time no vaccines had yet been developed to give protection against the virus.

Ms Ferrier visited places including the Houses of Parliament, a church and a bar and also took a taxi journey.

Prosecutor Mark Allan told the court: “The conduct amounted to a reckless disregard of public safety.”

Sentencing was deferred by the court until next month.
