MEMBERS of the Scottish Parliament have called for the government to address barriers to benefit uptake and reducing housing costs.
Speaking in a debate on “achieving a fairer Scotland,” MSPs from multiple parties put forward motions recognising challenges facing people across the country.
The event in Parliament followed the publication of the Fairer Scotland Action Plan, with Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Local Government Aileen Campbell outlining measures taken in Scotland to tackle austerity.
However, amendments were put forward to the SNP MSP’s motion, with Labour’s Pauline McNeill suggesting housing costs and benefit uptake should be challenged.
The Glasgow MSP added: “More ambition is required across government to tackle inequality and improve people’s quality of life.”
Green Party MSP Alison Johnstone urged the government to continue work on council-tax reform.
Voting on the motions took place after the Morning Star went to print.
