Hospital security to strike on Good Friday

SECURITY staff at Southampton General Hospital will strike on Good Friday to demand that action is taken to protect them from violence.

The 21 staff are members of general union Unite and are employed by security contractor Mitie.

The workers say that the company is failing to protect them from members of the public including drunk people and those with drug problems and mental health issues.

The staff want the company to provide them with equipment such as stab vests and security restraints.

They also want a pay increase because of the danger they face and their unsocial work hours.

Unite official Scott Kemp said: “We have consulted with our members overnight and while there has been some progress with the company inching towards our position, it was considered that not enough ground had been made to justify calling off the strike on Good Friday.”

More strike action is planned next month.
