Hundreds of refuse workers end strike action after securing 15% pay rise

HUNDREDS of refuse workers in Merseyside celebrated today after strike action forced bosses to concede an inflation-busting pay deal.

More than 200 Unite members employed by Biffa on an outsourced contract for Wirral Council are set to pocket a 15 per cent wage boost, backdated to April.

The deal, which followed walkouts earlier this month, also includes a commitment to boost pay again in April 2023 by between 7 and 9 per cent, depending on RPI inflation rates.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham hailed another win for her members, saying it was secured by “workers organising in a trade union and standing together for a better deal.

“Unite is doing what it says on the trade union tin —  we are delivering jobs, pay and conditions victories for our members.”
