Hunger striking Insulate Britain activist moved to prison's hospital wing

AN INSULATE BRITAIN member who has been on hunger strike for 13 days in prison has been moved to its hospital wing, the group said today.

Emma Smart, 44, is serving a four-month jail sentence for breaching a government injunction banning protests on major roads in England.

After her sentencing on November 17, she immediately vowed to stop eating until ministers issue a meaningful commitment to start insulating Britain’s leaky homes.

Insulate Britain announced today that Ms Smart was moved to the hospital wing at HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, on Friday.

The prison has become increasingly worried about her health, the group added.

Ms Smart said the conditions in the hospital wing, where there is little light and less time to leave the prison for exercise, was “testing my resolve to continue.

But she added: “I feel that not eating is the only thing I can do from prison to draw attention to those who will have to make the choice between heating and eating this winter.”

Insulate Britain members, including Ms Smart’s husband Andy Smith, are to stage a 24-hour fast outside 10 Downing Street on Tuesday in solidarity with her, the group said.

Ms Smith said his wife had been relocated to the hospital so that prison staff could more easily monitor her health.

“She is feeling a bit weak but she’s still in good spirits,” he said.

Ms Smart is one of nine members of the group who have been jailed for blocking the M25 during rush hour on October 8.

They received sentences of between three and six months and were ordered to pay £5,000 in costs each.

Campaigners have described the nine as “political prisoners.”
