Inquiry to investigate the death of a man who died while being restrained by Fife police

A PUBLIC inquiry into the death of a man who was being restrained by police in Fife is to begin on Monday, Scotland’s Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf confirmed today.

Sheku Bayoh died in May 2015 while being held by officers responding to a call in Kirkcaldy.

The 32-year-old’s family alleged that race played a part in his death and criticised the subsequent investigation.

Mr Yousaf announced the inquiry last November and its scope was determined in May.

Retired College of Justice senator Lord Bracadale will lead the proceedings, details of which will be announced shortly.

Mr Yousaf said: “The family of Mr Bayoh have shown remarkable dignity and perseverance during their five-year wait for an inquiry into the death of Sheku.

“I hope that today’s announcement gives them comfort and reassurance that the circumstances surrounding his death will be examined in a public and transparent manner.”
