It may be ‘possible to accelerate’ Scotland's lockdown exit, Sturgeon says as Covid cases decline

FIRST Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said it may be “possible to accelerate the exit from lockdown” as cases of coronavirus continue to decline.

The SNP laid out plans for Scotland’s route map out of lockdown in Holyrood today, including a return to schools for all primary age pupils over the next fortnight.

A phased return of pupils will take place between March 15 and Easter, with all pupils given at least some in-school teaching in that time before a full-time return after the holidays.

Twice-weekly testing will continue to be offered to all school staff when schools return, alongside physical distancing and ventilation measures in classrooms.

Ms Sturgeon said a decision will be made next week over whether the proposed timeline can be accelerated as case numbers fall.

She said: “I have always said if we can go further and faster, then we will not hesitate to do so.

“All of us want to move on as quickly as possible — and, as a priority, to see friends and family again. I hope that day is now not too far away.”

Guidance on entering people’s homes will also be amended to make clear that supporting new parents is allowed.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said the government must focus on recovery, asking the First Minister to set out a plan for supporting Scotland’s children.

Ms Sturgeon the work to help support an education recovery was already under way, with funding available to local authorities as part of a long-term project.

Scottish Greens parliamentary co-leader Alison Johnstone asked when additional support needs school staff will be given their dose of the vaccine, with Ms Sturgeon saying it was important to stick to clinical advice.
