PLAID CYMRU leader Adam Price attacked Boris Johnson today for not calling an emergency meeting over the flooding caused by Storm Dennis.

Mr Price said Wales has been “let down” after the Prime Minister failed to convene its Cobra committee to discuss how to tackle the heavy flooding.

He also criticised the Labour government in Wales and demanded “urgent answers” over its lack of a co-ordinated emergency response.

On a visit to damaged houses in Pontypridd, Mr Price emphasised the “scale of destruction” and said that the government should give Welsh people the same disaster funding they had been entitled to under the European Union’s solidarity scheme.

The River Wye rose over 7.1 metres in Monmouth today morning, reaching the highest levels on record.

Residents living along the river were evacuated over the weekend and the Wye Bridge was closed by police.

Natural Resources Wales described the flooding as reaching “unprecedented levels,” adding that people have been urged to avoid travelling if possible.

Mr Price said: “In Wales, climate change manifests itself through flooding, not famine, drought or fires. Flood prevention, both hard and natural defence, must be part of our fight against climate change.

“If this weekend is a taste of things to come, then we need to invest now in order to alleviate the economic costs later down the line.

“The communities of Wales have the ability to come together in the time of need, but they shouldn’t be doing it alone. They’ve been let down by both the Tory government in Westminster and the Labour government in Wales.”
