Just Stop Oil activists stage ‘go slow’ marches in Liverpool, Norwich and Brighton

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners caused traffic tailbacks when they staged “go slow” marches in Liverpool, Norwich and Brighton on Saturday.

The Just Stop Oil campaign group is demanding that the government stop issuing fossil fuel exploration and extraction licences.

“Go slow” marches have also taken place recently in London, Sheffield and Manchester in defiance of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s threat to crack down on the tactic.

A Just Stop Oil statement said: “Our government knows that licensing new fossil fuel projects is signing a death warrant for young people, for whole populations living in small island states and the global South.

“In future our government, and the fossil fuel producers and their enablers, will be held to account for their crimes.”

The government is expected to issue up to 100 new North Sea oil and gas licences though it faces legal challenges.

Government approval of Britain’s first new coal mine for over 30 years, at Whitehaven in Cumbria, is also being challenged.
