Kashmir solidarity protest in Bradford

A DEMONSTRATION in support of the people of Kashmir was staged in Bradford in West Yorkshire over the weekend.

Jammu and Kashmir is India’s most northerly state and is the only mainland Indian state with a majority Muslim population.

Protesters waved Kashmiri flags during Saturday’s demonstration near Bradford’s City Hall.

More than 20 per cent of Bradford’s 530,000 population are of Pakistani origin.

Since India gained independence from Britain in 1949 Jammu and Kashmir has had a special status in the Indian constitution. It was largely autonomous and self-governing, with its own constitution and flag.

But the nationalist Hindu-chauvinist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has abolished the special status, provoking street protests and unrest in the region.

Control of Kashmir has continued to be a source of tension between Pakistan and India for decades. Both countries have nuclear weapons.
