Labour calls for urgent action to make Scotland a ‘Fair Work Nation’

LABOUR MSPs called for urgent action to make Scotland a “Fair Work Nation” during a debate on the country’s recovery from coronavirus in Holyrood today.

A motion presented to Parliament by the Scottish party’s economy and fair work spokeswoman Monica Lennon attempted to commit the government to focusing on rebuilding the economy for all of Scotland after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Labour-led debate saw MSPs claim that Scotland’s economy must transform to be “people-centred” and “incorporate community wealth-building opportunities.”

Ms Lennon argued that any steps to improve Scotland post-pandemic must address the “structural inequalities that the pandemic has exposed in society” and the “opportunities that have been continually missed to deliver for workers and transform the exploitative low-wage economy.”

An amendment put forward by SNP ministers called for the devolution of employment law to Scotland to “properly address these issues.”

A vote took place after the Star went to press.
