Labour demand investigation into Downing Street refurb scandal

LABOUR is calling for parliament’s sleaze watchdog to investigate Boris Johnson over the luxury refurbishment of his Downing Street flat.

Deputy leader Angela Rayner accused the Prime Minister today of breaking parliamentary rules by failing to declare a donation used to pay for the works at No 10 in the MPs’ register of interests.

She urged Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone to open an inquiry into the donation, alleging that Mr Johnson knew of the money being received but did not declare it.

Last week, Christopher Geidt, an independent adviser on ministerial issues, cleared the PM of breaking the ministerial code over the affair.

Ms Rayner questioned that ruling, calling for transparency over how Mr Geidt had reached the finding that the PM had merely acted “unwisely” by allowing the works to go ahead without “rigorously” checking how the costs would be covered.

In a letter sent to Ms Stone, Ms Rayner accused Mr Johnson of “treating basic standards of integrity, openness and transparency with contempt and behaving as though there is one rule for him and another for everyone else.

“I therefore write to request that you instigate a further investigation into the Prime Minister’s failure to register this donation, using your powers as commissioner.”

The PM can use an annual public grant of up to £30,000 to pay for decorating his flat at No 10, but the cost of the works reportedly  reached £200,000, with the extra expense covered by Tory donor Lord Brownlow.
