Labour demands Parliament is recalled in order to pass new law to freeze energy bills

LABOUR has demanded a recall of Parliament so a new law can be introduced to freeze energy bills this winter.

The party has written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and both Tory leadership candidates, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, demanding MPs be brought back on Monday August 22 ahead of the new energy price cap rise announcement by Ofgem on August 26.

Labour announced its plan to freeze the cap on Monday – a measure that would need legislation to enact.

It says its fully funded £29 billion plan would prevent the energy price cap rising through the winter saving the average household £1,000 this winter, paid for by extra tax from oil and gas giants who are making eye-watering profits.

This comes as inflation hit a 40-year high of 10 per cent this week.

Labour shadow leader of the Commons Thangam Debbonaire wrote: “Across Britain, people are having to make unthinkable choices about how to pay their bills, causing endless worry for households and businesses.

“That is why I am writing to you today to urge you to bring Parliament back early on Monday August 22 so that we can freeze the energy price cap now ahead of winter.

“In seven days, Ofgem will announce the rise of the energy price cap.

“Against the backdrop of a rise in inflation to 10.1 per cent, this won’t just send households into a further spiral of worry, pushing them to cut back even further ahead of the winter.

“It will create another shock for our economy.

“With businesses and households on the brink, we cannot wait to act.”

Neither the government, Liz Truss nor Rishi Sunak have shown any willingness so far to adopt Labour’s strategy.
