LABOUR will not ignore structural inequalities faced by BAME workers, Baroness Doreen Lawrence pledged after a study found that black and minority-ethnic nursing staff experience worse PPE shortages.
Less than half of respondents to polling by the Royal College of Nurses said they had enough personal protective equipment, in contrast with two-thirds of white British nursing staff.
And 49 per cent of BAME respondents said they had been asked to reuse single-use PPE, compared with just 37 per cent of their white British colleagues.
Ms Lawrence, Labour’s race-relations adviser, said that the findings were “deeply concerning” and shed further light on BAME frontline workers’ experiences.
She said: “We know how crucial PPE is for key workers, and any inequality in provision should be seriously addressed.
“The government must ensure risk assessments for BAME staff are taking place so that all high-risk employees are adequately protected.
“We cannot — and will not — continue to ignore the structural inequalities faced by BAME workers.”
