Lack of a strategy blamed for jobs risk

THE government’s lack of an industrial strategy was blamed yesterday for 95 jobs being at risk at a car-parts plant in Wales.

The jobs under threat are at Japanese multinational manufacturer Calsonic Kansei in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, which produces parts such as radiators and oil coolers.

Unite the union said the announcement by the firm which employs more than 400 people was “grim news” for workers, their families and the local economy.

Unite regional officer Paul Evans said: “We will be seeking an urgent meeting with management to discuss the business rationale for these cuts during the consultation period.

“As recently as December the company was offered a £4.4 million grant by the Welsh government in order to create 88 jobs.

“We are going to question what today’s announcement means for this grant.

“Unite will be doing everything possible to avoid compulsory redundancies for our members.”
