Lecturers at 42 unis to ballot on strike action over pensions, pay and conditions

LECTURERS at 42 universities are to ballot on strike action over pensions, pay and conditions.

If calls for action succeed they will join colleagues at 52 other universities who are set to strike for three days from December 1.

The University and College Union (UCU) has warned that if the disputes cannot be resolved then more strikes were likely in the new year.

UCU is opposing pensions cuts of 35 per cent and say lecturers want a £2,500 a year pay increase.

They also want action to tackle “unmanageable workloads, pay inequality and insecure contracts that blight the sector.”

UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: “Next week staff at dozens of campuses will be going on strike over attacks on their pensions, pay and working conditions.

“In the new year, staff at 42 more universities could join them for a period of sustained and escalating industrial action.”

She accused university vice-chancellors of “still choosing to ignore the serious concerns of staff rather than address them.”
