Leeds drivers strike over ‘discriminatory’ regs

HUNDREDS of private-hire drivers in Leeds are due to strike for 24 hours today in a dispute over proposed new licensing regulations from the council.

Leeds City Council is proposing new regulations that include requiring drivers living out of the country for six months to produce documentary proof of good behaviour from the authorities of the country they have stayed in.

Leeds Private Hire Drivers Organisation (LPHDO), which represents some of the city’s 5,000 private-hire drivers, says the regulation is discriminatory.

It says other regulations “make us feel like criminals.”

The association’s vice-chairman Zahir Mahmood said: “Many of us have family abroad.

“We might go every three or four years, but when we do, we like to spend more time with them.”

Council deputy leader Debra Coupar said: “We would ask the Leeds Private Hire Drivers Organisation to reconsider their planned action and continue their dialogue with us.”
