LABOUR leadership contenders Lisa Nandy and Keir Starmer have been urged to reveal their campaign donors.

Rebecca Long Bailey is the only one of the three remaining candidates to have publicly named those funding her campaign, which had received donations totalling more than £1,500 when the Star went to press.

Her list reveals that the Unite union has contributed £215,000, Momentum nearly £120,000 and the Communications Workers Union more than £52,000.

Young Labour, representing around 100,000 party members, today joined calls for Ms Nandy and Mr Starmer to reveal their financial sources.

A statement said: “Our members have a right to transparency from the candidates who are appealing for their votes.”

The Young Labour committee demanded that the two candidates reveal their funding from December 13 2019, the day after the general election, to the present day and provide weekly updates for the rest of their campaigns.

The intervention came after the members’ ballot in the leadership contest opened on Monday.

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey insisted that Labour must be more transparent and trustworthy than the Tories. 

At the Oxford Union event on Wednesday evening, he said: “This is the week where Labour members can start casting their votes for the next leader, so it is vital that members have all the information they need to inform this vital decision.

“Trust in politics and politicians is essential, which is why it is really important that all the leadership candidates declare where their campaign money comes from.  

“In the Labour Party, there should be no secret financiers sitting in the shadows. So I appeal to the other candidates — follow Rebecca’s lead; publish your donor lists too.”

On ITV’s Peston show on Wednesday night, Mr Starmer failed to answer when a member of the audience asked him directly: “Who funds you?”

He merely said: “The parliamentary rules require you to register all your funding and then to publish it, and that’s what we’ve been doing. 

“My first tranche went up on the parliamentary website a few weeks ago, the next tranche … we’ve given it to the parliamentary authorities, they need to know. 

“I’ve got a compliance team. The parliamentary authorities are looking at it, they check it’s all in order and I think it’s going up as soon as they give it the green light, which will probably be on Monday of next week.”
