Nationwide protest calls on US to end 60-year blockade of Cuba

DEMONSTRATIONS took place nationwide at the weekend as part of a World Day of Action for Cuba, calling on the United States to end its 60-year blockade of the island.

Protesters were on the streets of London, Birmingham, Sheffield, Brighton, Manchester and Liverpool on Saturday.

Washington has been heavily criticised for preventing supplies of life-saving coronavirus vaccines and medical equipment from reaching Cuba.

The day of action came in the run-up to a vote by the United Nations general assembly on Wednesday, when an overwhelming majority is expected to again demand that the lifting of the blockade.

However, new US President Joe Biden has made no move to scrap the illegal measure, which has been condemned by the general assembly annually for the last 28 years.

The protests had the slogan: “President Biden, get your knee off Cuba’s neck!”

The Cuba Solidarity Campaign said: “Cuba’s solidarity with other peoples in struggle is without parallel. Now it needs, and deserves, our solidarity.”
