Only 12% of Windrush victims got compensation

JUST 12 per cent of Windrush victims claiming compensation have received payouts, official figures showed yesterday.

Home Office data showed that a total of 1,587 claims were made to the scheme by the end of September.

But only £1.6 million of an estimated £200m budget had been paid out to 196 people, with some 124 unsuccessful claims subject to an appeal.

Eighty-one eligible applicants were told they were not entitled to any money because their claims did not demonstrate that they had been adversely affected by the scandal.

Campaigners have accused the government of failing to spread word of the scheme among people now living in Africa or the Caribbean who may have been victims.

Most of the claims received by the end of September, where country of residence is documented, came from people living in the UK (1,247).

Only 43 are from the Caribbean and just three from Africa so far, the figures show.
