Over a third of Scots worried they can't pay for food and rent during lockdown, research finds

MORE than one in three Scots are worried about their ability to pay for food and rent during the coronavirus lockdown, according to new research published today.

A survey carried out by Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) found significant concerns about people’s ability to meet a range of financial commitments which are essential to everyday living.

The poll of more than 1,000 people, carried out by ScotPulse, shows 41 per cent of renters are also concerned about being able to meet rent payments, while 34 per cent are worried about their ability to pay for food and essentials.

CAS said the research shows Scots are facing a “cost-of-living” crisis.

Chief executive Derek Mitchell said: “We have seen for some time the problem of people just about managing in our economy — people who are especially vulnerable to disruptions to their income or significant increases in bills.

“What is essential now is that people apply for the support they are entitled to so they can best navigate this crisis.”

The poll comes as both the Holyrood and Westminster governments have announced a range of measures to help people with the cost of living during the coronavirus crisis.

Research consultant Mark Diffley said the polling results show clearly the financial difficulties resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

“Concern about day-to-day expenses is being felt in all parts of the country and in all sections of the population,” he said.

“People of all ages, from all social backgrounds and in all regions will feel the financial force of the pandemic.”
