Peace activist pleads not guilty for protesting arms fair

LEADING peace activist Symon Hill pleaded not guilty today to charges of having wilfully obstructed the highway during last month’s arms fair protests in east London.

At Thames magistrates’ court, the Peace Pledge Union campaign manager was told that he and two other demonstrators arrested separately at the same event would be tried together.

Mr Hill’s lawyers, Mike Schwarz of Bindmans and Pippa Woodrow of Doughty Street Chambers, successfully argued against the decision.

More than 100 people were arrested while protesting outside the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) arms fair at London’s ExCeL centre in September.

Inside, international delegations, including from repressive states such as Saudi Arabia and Israel, viewed a variety of military hardware such as warships, tanks and weaponry.

The next hearing in Mr Hill’s case will take place at Stratford magistrates’ court on December 6.
