Plaid Cymru pledges new tax credit for hard-up private renters

PLAID CYMRU is pledging tax credits for private tenants who pay more than 30 per cent of their income on rent and utilities.

Ceredigion parliamentary candidate Ben Lake said that almost half of households renting in the private sector in Wales pay such high proportions for the basic means of life — 37 per cent of private renters in Wales earn less than £15,000 a year.

Mr Lake announced Plaid Cymru would create a new tax credit of up to £25 a week to each household paying this much on rent and bills.

He added that a Plaid Cymru government in Wales would create a National Housing Company with a target of achieving 20,000 green new homes over five years, and would support local authorities wishing to build new council housing.

“We need an overhaul of housing policy in Wales, bringing thousands of empty homes back into use and creating a planning system which serves our communities rather than the profits of housing corporations,” Mr Lake also said.
