Police medic kicked in the head during weekend's far-right protest

Scotland Yard releases images of two men who officers want to speak to in connection with the incident

FAR-RIGHT protesters dragged a police medic to the ground and kicked him in the head in a “sickening attack,” new footage revealed today.

The assault took place during a rally in support of jailed fascist leader “Tommy Robinson,” one of the many aliases of former English Defence League leader Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, in central London on Sunday.

Footage taken on an officer’s body camera and posted on social media shows the medic being dragged to the ground with one man’s arms round his neck and disappearing from sight, surrounded by a group of Mr Yaxley-Lennon’s thugs.

Footage also shows officers struggling to maintain order as Robinson supporters crowd round a police van and push against police cordons.

The hoodlums were also seen throwing bottles and chairs from outside a pub at the police and counterprotesters.

Scotland Yard released images of two men today who officers want to speak to in connection with the incident.

Superintendent Roy Smith, who policed the demonstration, branded it a “sickening and cowardly” attack on the medic and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Demonstrators were marching down Regent Street at the time with chants of “We want Tommy Out,” while the counterprotest by groups such as Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) demonstrated in the same location, separated by police.

Mr Yaxley-Lennon was handed a nine-month sentence at the Old Bailey last month after he was found guilty of contempt of court by live-streaming footage of defendants in breach of a reporting ban. The hatemonger will serve just nine-and-a-half weeks of his sentence.

SUTR’s Weyman Bennett called the violent behaviour a “reflection of ‘Tommy Robinson’ on the far-right movement.”

A SUTR spokesperson said that the “sickening attack,” along with the large number of arrests and violence of known fascists, “reveals the dark heart at the core of Robinson’s support.”

They said: “Outnumbered by anti-fascists on Saturday and humiliated in recent elections, they are increasingly turning to greater acts of violence.

“The horrific attack in El Paso reminds us of the continual threat of far-right violence and terrorism — it’s vital that everyone who values humanity unites to oppose both these violent fascists and the bigotry that emboldens them.”
