Probe virus impact on BAME people — RMT

TRANSPORT union RMT is calling for an investigation into why black and minority ethnic people (BAME) are being hit disproportionately by Covid-19.

The union, which represents London Underground, national rail and bus workers, also want transport bosses to introduce measures to protect BAME staff from infection.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Concrete evidence is continually emerging that shows that BAME people are far more likely to die from Covid-19 than white people.

“We have therefore written to all transport employers and safety regulators asking them what actions they are taking.

“That includes determining what is happening at the workplace and identifying the protections that can be implemented.

“RMT will use every means at our disposal to protect our members.”

The call comes as London Mayor Sadiq Khan considers banning travel on Tube trains and buses in the capital without a face covering.
