Rail union to fight London Underground's plans to abolish the Night Tube train drivers' grade

RAIL union RMT threatened industrial action today against plans by London Underground to abolish the Night Tube train drivers’ grade from next week.

Bosses intend to axe the positions from May 16 in what the union says is a cash-saving move aimed at “shunting staff around at will.”

Instead of accommodating Night Tube drivers who want to go full- time to help plug staffing shortages, RMT has slammed management for attempting to impose night shifts on existing full-time drivers.

The union warns the plans would threaten 200 jobs and disrupt the work-life balance of 3,000 drivers.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said the proposals had “caused uproar” among staff, and called on Labour’s re-elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan to intervene.

“This breach of trust by an out-of-touch management abolishes the part-time jobs of workers — mainly women — who want them,” he said.

“This is the thanks Tube drivers have been given for keeping the service running [during the Covid-19 pandemic].

“We are calling on [Mr Khan] to pressure bosses to see reason and protect jobs and conditions.”

Transport for London has been asked to comment.
