Rally held in support of Goldsmiths' lecturers in defence of jobs

AN ESTIMATED 1,000 people rallied in support of London university lecturers today as they launched three weeks of strike action in defence of jobs.

Bosses at Goldsmiths, part of the University of London, want to axe 52 lecturers’ jobs.

The Goldsmiths branch of the University & College Union (UCU) said the redundancy threat is part of a “recovery” plan involving £4 million in cuts this year and £2m next year — and are responding with strike action.

Today’s rally to launch the strike won support from other unions, UCU branches, Islington Trade Union Council, Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) and the community, and speakers included Labour former deputy leader John McDonnell. An open letter in support of the lecturers has been signed by over 4,000 people.

The UCU said: “This is a bad plan, both in terms of the financial impacts and the injustice of the proposed cuts themselves.”

Pickets will be in place at the college every day from 8am to 1pm.
