Renter protections set to last until March next year

PROTECTIONS to prevent evictions of renters in Scotland look set to be extended after the Scottish government indicated that it intends to prolong emergency legislation into next year.

Cabinet Secretary Mike Russell told the Scottish Parliament yesterday that the government would bring forward changes to keep the existing coronavirus measures in force until March 31 2021.

An extended notice period for evictions and other protections were put in place earlier this year.

The government added that Housing Minister Kevin Stewart would provide more detail in the coming days.

Charities such as Shelter had called for a ban on evictions until next April.

The announcement comes after 30 charities and organisations announced plans to set out a route map to permanently end rough sleeping in Scotland, starting next week.

The Everyone Home collective has agreed a “triple-lock” of measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on homelessness involving more homes, no return to rough sleeping and no evictions into homelessness.
