Scottish Greens call for government to work with trade unions in restarting tourism to ensure fair jobs

TRADE unions must be involved in discussions on restarting the tourism industry to ensure fair work terms are put on the agenda, Scottish Greens said today.

Questioning the Scottish government in Holyrood today, Scottish Greens tourism spokesman John Finnie highlighted the importance of the tourism sector to the Highlands & Islands region, where it accounts for 15 per cent of jobs, almost double the national average.

Mr Finnie said: “The current crisis has devastated the tourism sector, which so many in the Highlands & Islands rely on for work.

“It is vital, as the Scottish government plans for the restart of this important sector, that it ensures that fair work practices are put at the forefront of its plan.

“With tourism playing such an important economic role, it is vital that this sector works for communities, workers and businesses.

“That must start by the government ensuring that all those who work in this essential industry receive a commitment to fair pay and good working conditions as the sector gets plans back up and running.”
