Scotland’s schools aid in PPE crisis

SCOTTISH Labour has applauded schools across the country for helping to alleviate the “concerning” shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for front-line workers by offering their own.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, schools have donated and distributed goggles and safety visors to meet requests from front-line workers in hospitals, GPs’ surgeries, care homes and pharmacies.

Both Larbert and Denny High in Falkirk are donating safety goggles and making visors for health and care staff, with Lochaber High in Fort William and schools in the Borders also contributing.

But Labour has said that the need for such initiatives underlines the shameful shortage of equipment for workers exposed to Covid-19.

Labour’s health spokeswoman Monica Lennon MSP  said: “PPE shortages are a big concern, and it’s heart-warming to see teachers and local businesses coming together to donate and make supplies for those on the front line who face the greatest risk.

“Ultimately, the buck stops with the Scottish government to ensure our front-line workers are not put in danger because of PPE shortages.”
