Scotland: ‘Virus outbreak worse than many realise’

SCOTLAND’S Covid-19 situation is worse than many realise, a leading trade unionist has warned.

Helen McFarlane, a Unite rep and speech and language therapist in the NHS, was speaking on Saturday at the virtual launch of the Covid Zero campaign.

Office for National Statistics figures in November suggested that, proportionately, more people were dying with coronavirus in Scotland than in England, despite polls showing greater support for First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s restrictions than for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s.

Ms McFarlane said: “Even within the left, we regularly say, ‘well done Scotland, you’re doing better,’ but that is really complacent. It’s not Boris [here], but we’re not doing great.”

“We need to test. We need PPE, we have to keep ourselves virus free.

“Different left groups need to work together.

“We have to compare ourselves with those who have adopted correct policy procedures, and not say: ‘At least we’ve got Nicola Sturgeon, who’s a much better orator that Boris Johnson’ and therefore somehow we’re better [at tackling Covid-19].”
