Scottish Labour calls for rent freezes and fare cuts to deal with spiralling cost-of-living

SCOTTISH Labour leader Anas Sarwar demanded emergency legislation from Scotland’s government today to help deal with the spiralling cost of living.

Mr Sarwar said there should be a winter evictions ban, rent freeze, cancellation of school meal debt, halving of rail fares and a cap on the cost of bus journeys.

He also said there should be additional cash for “bridging payments” for children in receipt of free school meals and support for businesses.

It comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced on Tuesday that she will be hosting a crisis summit with energy companies to help tackle the crisis, including investigating a “more compassionate approach to debt management.”

Ms Sturgeon said: “I know that this is an incredibly unsettling time for households and energy consumers across Scotland and the Scottish government will continue to do everything we can to support those affected.”

But Mr Sarwar said: “The cost-of-living crisis is a national emergency on the scale of the pandemic — and dealing with it requires both of Scotland’s governments to move quickly and decisively.

“Instead we’ve seen silence from Boris Johnson and nothing of value from those squabbling to replace him.

“So while Labour propose a plan that would save families £1,000 on their energy bills, Tories call for tax cuts for billionaires.”

Mr Sarwar also blasted the SNP for coming up with “little of substance” and for “the total lack of ideas” from both governments.

He said: “That is why Scottish Labour is calling for emergency legislation to be put before the Scottish Parliament now, as the starting point for a response to help people without delay.

“Our plan sets out areas where Holyrood can act urgently to help people now.”

Mr Sarwar added: “It’s clear more of the same won’t do.”
