Small airport alone puts Leeds at its carbon limit

TINY Leeds-Bradford International Airport (LBA) produces the whole city’s target of carbon emissions, a study has found.

The airport at Yeadon, within Leeds city boundaries, is small compared to giants such as neighbouring Manchester, and to London airports Heathrow and Gatwick, the Leeds University researchers said.

However they revealed that greenhouse gas emissions from flights from and to LBA are still enough to blow the entire “carbon budget” that Leeds City Council has set.

The report states: “Continued support for airport expansion, by both national and local government, means that rather than tackling the crisis, we’re flying full-speed towards it.”

Leeds City Council has set out a maximum for emissions from all activities in the city combined, in order to meet Leeds’ ambitious climate targets.

The airport was run by a consortium of local authorities until it was privatised in 2007.
