Starmer defends plan to freeze energy prices

LABOUR leader Sir Keir Starmer has been forced to defend his plan to freeze energy prices this winter.

On Monday, Labour proposed a freeze on the energy price cap at its current level of £1,971 for six months from October.

But some economists have said Labour’s plans would be hugely expensive.

On a visit to Swindon today, Sir Keir insisted that his plan was fully funded and “depends on a windfall tax on the oil and gas companies to maintain that price freeze.”

He said: “We basically have got a choice: We either allow the oil and gas companies to continue to make huge profits while millions of households are really struggling or we do something about it.

“I think that this assumption that most people can afford these massive hikes in their energy bills is completely wrong. I think many, many people are going to struggle this winter and that’s why it’s very important we have a scheme that is universal.”
