STUC calls for Bill to allow tenants to appeal on rent

THE Scottish Trade Union Congress (STUC) called on Holyrood yesterday to adopt a Bill that would allow tenants to appeal their rents.

The STUC wrote a letter to Housing Minister Kevin Stewart in support of Scottish Labour MSP Pauline McNeil’s Fair Rents Bill.

The Bill would begin to address the power imbalance between tenants and private landlords.

It would also require landlords to register rent levels, create a comprehensive database of rents, cap rent rises at 1 per cent above inflation, and would give renters increased protection against extortionate or unfair rent increases.

The STUC slammed the inequities in the Scottish government’s support for private landlords over renters, and called on it to do more to “redesign” Scotland’s private rental sector.

In the letter, the STUC said: “The coronavirus crisis has starkly displayed the imbalance of support given to those who rent, and those who own properties.

“The need for redesigning our housing market has never been so desperate as we enter another recession.”
