Thames Water announces hosepipe ban for 15 million people

THAMES WATER announced today it will put a hosepipe ban in place next week from August 24.

The company, which supplies 15 million people, joins South East Water, South West Water, Yorkshire Water, Southern Water and Welsh Water in implementing bans.

The announcement follows the driest July for 50 years and the driest first half of the year since 1976.

The Environment Agency has said it will take the equivalent of weeks of rain to recharge water sources and end the drought.

Thames Water said in a statement: “The recent heatwaves mean that demand for water is also at record levels.”

Labour MP Diane Abbott tweeted: “Thames Water announces hosepipe ban but it loses 605 million litres a day through leaks and paid shareholders £37.1 million. Urgently needs to be brought back into public ownership.”
