Tinder bot launched to teach passengers how to stop deportations

LGBT campaigners launched Tinder bots to teach passengers how to stop deportations on their flights to mark Valentine’s Day yesterday.

Hundreds of passengers across Britain were contacted by the Lesbians and Gays Support the Migrants (LGSMigrants) with an automatic script providing them with a step-by-step guide.

The bot uses the Tinder profiles of real people concerned about deportations.

Users download a Chrome extension which automatically changes their Tinder location to a nearby airport and are then matched with passengers where the bot runs an interactive script, responding to questions and directs them to an online guide.

One of the opening lines by the bot reads: “I’m at the airport atm [at the moment] and my mate has just been telling me about how British Airways (BA) forcefully deport people on their flights.”

It then goes on to inform users of Jimmy Mubenga who died on a BA deportation flight, asking if they would try to stop someone being deported on their flight.

LGSMigrants spokesperson Sam Bjorn said: “This Valentine’s Day, BA needs to swipe left and end its toxic relationship with the Home Office’s brutal deportations.

“Tinder is an app that brings people together which is why we wanted to use it to highlight how deportations tear communities apart.

“BA and other airlines carry out deportations which force people to countries where they have few connections, and could face persecution or death.”

Thousands of people are deported every year through commercial Airlines, including on BA flights.

In December, LGSMigrants took over Tube advertising with their “See it, Say it, Stop it” campaign which provided commuters with information on how to stop deportations.
