Tories in meltdown over Brexit

THE Tories are descending further into chaos over Brexit with one Conservative MP telling Chancellor Philip Hammond “up yours” on live radio and another resigning from the party after his motion was rejected.

Brexiteer MP Mark Francois also accused pro-Remainer Mr Hammond of leading a Cabinet faction who “attempted to stop us leaving the European Union.”

He made the comments after MPs in favour of Britain remaining in a customs union, as an alternative to Prime Minister Theresa May’s thrice-rejected deal, lost an indicative vote by three votes.

None of the four motions received majority support last night after they were selected by Speaker John Bercow.

Mr Francois told the BBC: “A number of members of the Cabinet led by Philip Hammond, utterly in cahoots with backbenchers across the house, attempted to stop us leaving the European Union.”

The member of the European Research Group (ERG) of Tory Eurosceptics added: “If you’re listening Mr Hammond, my fraternal message to you is: ‘Up yours’.”

Conservative MP Margot James tweeted that it was “so awful to hear the vindictive and insulting language used by Mark Francois.”

Tory MP Henry Smith tweeted: “Enough of this bullshit, the British people by the largest majority in UK poll history voted to leave the EU — just do it and move in to a better future ...”

The furore came after Nick Boles, who attempted to gather support for a Norway-style relationship with the EU dubbed “Common Market 2.0,” dramatically resigned the Tory whip in the Commons last night to sit as an “Independent Progressive Conservative.”

He said: “I have failed chiefly because my party refuses to compromise.

“I regret therefore to announce that I can no longer sit for this party.”
