Trade unionists celebrate Eleanor Marx's 164th birthday

YOUNG trade unionists and Labour members celebrated Eleanor Marx’s 164th birthday in London last night.

Eleanor, the youngest daughter of Karl Marx, was one of the founding organisers of the National Union of General Workers, which merged into the general union GMB.

After a life dedicated to building the socialist and trade union movement across Europe, she committed suicide in 1898.

An annual Eleanor Marx Award is presented to female GMB members who are considered especially inspirational or hard-working.

Amelia Horgan, the vice-chair of London Young Labour, said: “Radical women in history are either forgotten or inadequately remembered.

“Today, we must continue to build the institutions that nurture and encourage socialist women and to sustain them in the fight against capitalism, which, if we do not destroy, will continue to make women suffer.”
