Trump’s visit cost £3.5 million in policing

NEARLY £3.5 million was spent on policing US President Donald Trump’s first state visit to Britain, official figures show.

The US president was met by tens of thousands of protesters in London who turned out to tell him that he and his policies were not welcome.

Figures released by the Metropolitan Police today show that more than 6,300 officers were deployed across the three-day visit.

The latest figures, released under a freedom of information request, do not include covert or protection officers, with the majority, some £2,261,425, listed as “opportunity costs.”

A breakdown shows more than £800,000 was spent on overtime, £215,000 on infrastructure, £31,385 on fleet costs, £23,000 on hotels, £34,481 on catering and £41,000 on mutual aid.

Stand up to Racism co-convener Weyman Bennett said: “Donald Trump’s racist comments means that not a single penny should be spent on giving refuge to [him].

“His admiration of Prime Minister Boris Johnson shows the sickening alliances of the bigoted and sexist environment he encourages.”

Mr Trump spent three days in Britain on his first official state visit, which began on June 3 and included a state banquet with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, before a two-night stay in Ireland.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn addressed crowds of protesters from a stage in Whitehall during the second day of the president’s stay, while Mr Trump dismissed reports of demonstrations as “fake news.”

The protests saw the return of the Trump baby blimp and a 16-foot talking robot of the president sitting on a gold toilet.

Authorities in Portsmouth, where Mr Trump attended the D-Day memorial event, and Ireland, where he stayed at his golf resort, have not yet released information on the costs of the president’s visit or the number of officers that were deployed.
