Tube cleaners must work 20 years to catch up with tfl bosses

CLEANERS on London Underground have to work for 20 years to be paid the amount forked out annually to a Transport for London (TfL) executive, union research revealed today.

Staff who keep the Tube clean would have to work even longer — for 246 years — to be paid the salary of the boss of the profiteering private contractor which employs them.

Cleaners, who are members of rail union RMT, are balloting on strike action over pay.

TfL’s highest paid executive receives £374,000 a year, RMT research has found. The boss of ABM, the United States-based outsourcing firm employing the cleaners, is paid £4.5 million.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “We are balloting our cleaner members on the London Underground employed by ABM and are campaigning for a strong Yes vote for industrial action in their fight for equal treatment at work with regard to travel facilities, sick pay and a decent pension.”
