TUC slams ‘appalling decision’ to award P&O ferries owner DP World new freeport contract

THE TUC blasted the “appalling” Tory decision today to award disgraced P&O Ferries owner DP World a contract to co-run a new freeport in south-east England.

The Dubai-based company ordered the ferry operator to suddenly sack nearly 800 British-based seafarers without consultation and replace them with cheaper overseas staff in March 2022.

Despite condemnation from ministers, successive Tory administrations have taken little action against the firm, which has now been awarded the right to help run the Thames Estuary freeport.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak said: “This is an appalling decision.

“Ministers should have stripped the company of all its public contracts and severed commercial ties, but the government has chosen instead to reward it with another bumper deal.

“This is giving a green light to other rogue employers to act with impunity.”

Downing Street claims the site will create 21,000 jobs and bring in £2.5 billion, but unions warn that low-tax or tax-free “enterprise zones” allow multinationals to freeride on Britain’s infrastructure with little net benefit.
