Unite hails Arriva North West pay deal as dispute ends

UNITE hailed a major victory for its striking members at Arriva North West buses today after they backed an inflation-busting pay rise of about £2,300 a year.

The union said that more than 2,000 union members at 11 Merseyside garages had voted overwhelmingly for the 11.1 per cent wage boost, following nearly a month of all-out industrial action.

A previous offer of 9.6 per cent — below July’s consumer prices index inflation rate of 10.1 per cent — had been rejected by a large majority of members, but Unite confirmed the dispute is now over.

General secretary Sharon Graham said: “Our members stood strong for a month. They thoroughly deserve their magnificent victory.

“This is how Unite responds to the cost-of-living crisis, with a win that will put an extra £55 per week in our members’ wallets.

“Arriva North West’s German parent company could well afford to raise pay. We say to other employers: take note. Where you can pay, you should do so.”

The dispute saw walkouts at depots in Southport, Bootle, Green  Lane, St Helens, Speke, Runcorn, Bolton, Wythenshawe, Winsford, Wirral and Macclesfield.
