US spy base expansion questioned in the Commons

THE activities of a secretive US spy base in Britain that is seeking expansion will be raised in the House of Commons tomorrow.

RAF Croughton is staffed by more than 1,000 US military and civilian personnel operating high-tech international surveillance equipment.

US authorities at the base have applied for planning permission to erect more of the huge globes in a £200 million expansion of its operations.

Northamptonshire South MP Angela Leadsom will question the diplomatic implications of the expansion of the base’s activities in Parliament.

Sarah Swift, of the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign, said: “Maybe this debate will prompt some questions about what the US is doing at Croughton and why, which is related to what it’s doing at Menwith Hill.”

The base attracted public attention in August last year when 19-year-old Harry Dunn was killed after former CIA agent Anne Sacoolas drove into his motorcycle last August.

Ms Sacoolas was driving on the wrong side of the road at the time.

His family have lodged objections to the application and launched a campaign against the expansion.
