CLIMATE activists chained and glued themselves to the railings at Royal Ascot at the weekend in a protest intended to follow in the footsteps of the suffragettes.
Four Extinction Rebellion activists entered the track on Saturday in an action aimed at the Queen, who arrived at the races earlier that day.
They urged the monarch to use her influence to make an emergency speech on the climate emergency and put pressure on leaders to take action “rather than just paying lip service to it.”
The female protesters also intended the action to pay homage to suffragette Emily Davison, who died after being hit by the king’s horse during the Epsom Derby in 1913.
One of the protesters, Sam Smithson, 38, said: “I’m really sorry to be disrupting this event, but unfortunately, like suffragette Emily Davison, we have been left with no other choice, as we are running out of time in the race to tackle the climate and ecological emergency.”
The four were removed by security and arrested.
The group said they entered the track when horses were stationary to avoid causing any injury.
