XR activists shut down Shell petrol stations across Scotland at the weekend

SHELL petrol stations across Scotland were shut down by protesters at the weekend as environmentalists highlighted the dangers of the oil and gas industry.

Sites in Dundee and Glasgow were temporarily closed on Sunday after Extinction Rebellion members blocked entry to petrol stations as part of the Rig Rebellion, a fortnight-long campaign against the fossil fuel industry.

The entrance to the East Marketgait station in Dundee was blocked by 15 protesters for about an hour, while in Glasgow, the Victoria Road site was shut down briefly.

This latest action follows the occupation of an oil rig which was docked in Dundee.

Those targeting the fuel sites on Sunday said their actions were in solidarity with the seven members who now face prosecution for climbing the rig.

Shell said the company “agree that action is needed now on climate change” and that its business will evolve to address this.
