Bolivian women gather to seek end to patriarchy in government

BOLIVIAN women are discussing plans to overthrow patriarchy in government in a two-day conference organised by the Bartolina Sisa Confederation of Indigenous, Native and Campesina Women, which started in the capital La Paz yesterday.

Activists from across the country will attend the convention to develop a list of key demands that will be delivered to Bolivian president Evo Morales.

The women hope the proposals, which aim to promote women and minority communities in government, will be included in the 2025 Patriotic Agenda and the Economic Plan of Social Development.

“Today women are thinking of better days for our Bolivia, for our homeland that needs and should prepare depatriarchalisation proposals to deliver to our country and improve development,” explained Bartolina Sisa spokeswoman Segundina Flores at the opening of the conference.

“We are inviting the many women, both elected and appointed authorities, as well as ex-leaders and ex-officials, the city and the entire department — there are going to be many women reviewing some very important issues,” Ms Flores added.

Vice-minister of Equal Opportunities Estefania Morales said the demands developed at the convention would be a collaborative effort by women who share concerns over political, social, economic, cultural, communication, equality, justice and sexual violence in Bolivia.

Mr Morales is one of the longest-serving leaders in the region and retains popular support among the Bolivian people, who re-elected him as president in 2014.

He brought women, indigenous people and trade unionists into government forging a Unity Pact which drafted a new Bolivian constitution, which was approved in a 2009 referendum.
