British government funding research into drones despite claiming it wasn't, report finds

Drone Wars UK revealed its study at the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s Future Wars conference this weekend

THE government actively funds research into drones despite claiming to have no plans to develop them, a new report reveals.

The report, which was launched by Drone Wars UK at the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s Future Wars conference over the weekend, shows that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been instrumental in financing the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Entitled Off the Leash: the Development of Autonomous Military Drones in the UK, the report shows that a number of corporations and public organisations are involved in developing UAVs, and that the MoD views these companies as “key enablers.”

This is despite the government’s claims that it has “no intention” of developing autonomous weapons.

The report also claims that the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and a “significant” number of universities are also involved in military research development.

The recommendations of Off the Leash are that the government encourage a wider debate on what it calls “autonomous warfare,” and that MPs must begin to scrutinise military research development companies.
