Care workers going to employment tribunal over punitive contracts

YORKSHIRE care workers who were sacked when their jobs were transferred to the private sector are taking their cases to an employment tribunal.

Twenty-two Doncaster care workers were sacked by profiteer Runwood Homes last September for refusing to sign new contracts that would have cut their pay and worsened their working conditions.

They were previously employed by Doncaster Council, which transferred seven council residential homes to Runwood in 2015 — as well as the staff working in them.

The company, which had promised to improve the living environment and increase bed numbers, then set about slashing wages and conditions to increase its profits.

Public-service union Unison regional organiser Rianne Johnson said: “The treatment of these dedicated care workers is an all-too familiar story when public services are privatised.

“Runwood Homes, like many other private companies, have attacked pay and conditions in order to maximise their profits.”

She accused Runwood of acting unlawfully.

The cases will be heard at Sheffield Employment Tribunal from September 10-14.
